What a Registered Trademark Actually Protects

Building a brand without registering it means anyone else can use a similar name, logo, or slogan, and you have little recourse if they do. Registration gives you the exclusive legal right to your mark nationwide, and the standing to stop others from trading on it. Here's what can be registered.

  • Word marks: your business or product name, standing on its own
  • Logos & device marks: a distinctive symbol, icon, or visual design
  • Slogans & taglines: a distinctive phrase tied specifically to your brand
  • Combination marks: your name and logo registered together as one composite mark

We start with a search of the Register before you file, so you're not building a brand around a name someone else already owns.

Our Process

How We Handle Your Trademark Registration

Six steps, from search to a certificate you can actually enforce.

01

Trademark Search

We search the Register for conflicting marks in your class before you file, so you're not building on a name that's already taken.

02

Class Selection

We identify the correct Nice Classification class, or classes, for the goods or services you actually offer.

03

Application Filing

We file your application with IPO-Pakistan's Trade Marks Registry, with your mark's representation and goods/services specification.

04

Examination

An IPO-Pakistan examiner reviews your mark for distinctiveness and conflicts, we respond to any objections raised.

05

Publication & Opposition

Once cleared, your mark is published in the Trademark Journal, opening a window for third parties to oppose, we monitor and respond on your behalf.

06

Registration & Renewal

Once opposition clears, we secure your registration certificate and track your renewal deadline so protection never lapses.

Not the Finish Line

Registration Is Just the Start of Protecting Your Brand

A registered trademark is valid for 10 years from filing and can be renewed indefinitely, but only if renewal is filed before it lapses. A lapsed mark can be picked up by someone else, and a name that's never registered can be registered out from under you by a competitor who files first.

We track your renewal deadline as part of the same engagement, and if your business is being set up or restructured around the same time, we can handle that alongside your registration.

03

Opposition Monitored & Answered

We watch the publication period and respond to any opposition on your behalf, not just file and wait.

04

Renewal Tracked, So Your Mark Never Lapses

We keep your renewal date on file and follow up before it's due, not after.

Common Questions

Trademark Registration FAQs

What can and can't be registered as a trademark in Pakistan?

Distinctive marks can be registered, including word marks (your business or product name), logos and device marks, slogans, and combination marks that pair a name with a design. Purely descriptive or generic terms, and marks that are identical or confusingly similar to an existing registered trademark in the same class, generally can't be registered.

How long does trademark registration take in Pakistan?

Roughly a year to a year and a half from filing to certificate, as an indicative timeframe. That includes examination, publication in the Trademark Journal, and a mandatory opposition window, and it can extend further if your application is objected to or opposed.

What happens during the opposition period?

Once your application clears examination, it's published in the Trademark Journal, opening a window during which anyone with a conflicting interest can file an opposition. If that happens, both sides present their case and the registrar decides, with the option to appeal to the High Court. If no opposition is filed, your application proceeds to registration.

How long does a registered trademark stay valid, and how do I renew it?

A registered trademark is valid for 10 years from the filing date and can be renewed indefinitely, in further 10-year terms, as long as renewal is filed before it lapses. We track your renewal deadline so protection doesn't lapse without you noticing.

Do I need a separate application for each class of goods or services?

Yes. Pakistan uses the Nice Classification system, 45 classes in total, goods generally in classes 1 to 34 and services in classes 35 to 45. If your business covers more than one class, each one needs its own application to be fully protected.

Do you handle patents or copyright as well?

Trademark registration, covering your brand names, logos, and slogans, is the core of our intellectual property practice. If your business also has a patent or copyright matter, talk to us about the specifics and we'll advise on the right path forward.
